herniated disc

Have you been diagnosed with a herniated disc? Maybe you just suspect that there is something a bit “off” in your back and think a herniated disc might be to blame. If so, you probably have questions – and our team at Lambert Chiropractic Health Centre in Mississauga is here to provide a few answers.

What causes herniated discs?

Herniated discs occur when the discs between your joints tear and spill out – often onto the nerves and surrounding tissues. Many things can cause a herniation, with age being at the top of the list. As we age, our discs lose some of their fluid, making them more susceptible to damage. Other causes can include obesity, poor posture, auto and sports accidents, and spinal misalignments.

What are the symptoms of a herniated disc?

Not everyone experiences symptoms with a herniated disc but many do. When the disc’s filling spills out onto the nerve endings, it can create pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling around the impacted area. You will often feel pain when you are sitting or notice the pain starts after certain activities. You might also experience some joint pain since your discs – which act as cushions – aren’t providing the support they are supposed to provide.

How can a chiropractor help?

Chiropractors have various natural, non-invasive methods of treatment for herniated discs. A variety of chiropractic techniques and methods deliver spinal adjustments as the main source of treatment for herniated discs. Misalignment of vertebrae may shift the bones of the spine in three dimensions and contribute to the herniation.

Imagine a jar with a lid sitting on top. By turning the lid, it moves in three dimensions and locks down on the jar. If this occurs in the spine, the vertebrae lock down and stress the discs, as well as the nerves exiting the spine. Chiropractic adjustments work to open the lid and decrease these stresses.
