Chiropractic Adjustment Techniques

At Lambert Chiropractic Health Centre in Mississauga Ontario, Dr. Lambert offers a variety of Chiropractic adjusting techniques. For the many people who have never been to a chiropractor, they are not aware of the different methods of adjusting the spine available to patients. This may even apply to people who have been to a chiropractor before and thought that there was only one way to be adjusted.

What Is A Chiropractic Adjustment?

By definition, a Chiropractic Adjustment is a fast but shallow application of force in a direction of correction in a joint. The chiropractor is skillfully trained with years of education and clinical experience to identify areas in the body that need this type of attention. If a joint is suffering from dysfunction, the chiropractor is able to adjust this joint to restore a more natural function. The adjustment is not forcing the body to do anything it does not want to do, but is in fact restoring movement that the body has forgotten how to engage. One of the major benefits of a chiropractic adjustment is not just the change in motion, but the massive stimulus it provides the brain and nervous system. This would be equal to finding a breaker panel switch turned off in your home. When you turn that switch back to the on position, everything along that circuit powers back up and starts functioning once again.

How Do These Different Techniques Work?

The most commonly recognized technique is the Diversified Technique which uses a hands-on gentle thrust to move the spine. This may create a quiet popping sound as the joint opens and allows carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas expands. These are the same gasses you see when you open a bottle of Champagne or carbonated water. Gonstead technique is another hands-on manual technique.

Table assisted techniques use the person’s body weight and gravity along with the chiropractor’s guiding input, to create the energy needed to move the spine. Thompson technique is one of these table assisted techniques. The tables themselves may make noise as the pieces are activated. Upper Cervical technique is another table assisted method of adjusting the top of the spine.

Chiropractic Biophysics and Pettibon techniques may incorporate both the hands-on and table assisted adjusting methods.

Instrument adjusting uses a specially designed instrument to adjust the spine.  Activator technique and Torque Release Technique are two examples of instrument adjusting to improve nervous system function in patients.

Why Get Adjusted?

The human spine is put under stress from birth to our last days. Repetitive movements, posture stresses, sports, computers, couches in front of the TV all have the potential to add damage over time if not addressed. Think about driving your car into potholes over time. For every mile you drive with your wheels out of alignment, you are adding accumulated damage over time. Driving repeatedly into large and small potholes will accelerate the problem. Eventually there is so much damage, your car breaks down.

The human body works much the same way. If you are adding stress to your body at a faster rate than your body can repair, it creates accelerated aging. Chiropractic adjustments, regardless of technique, help restore proper movement and more importantly improves the nervous system’s ability to keep up with daily demands and stresses.
