Neuropathy is caused by damaged nerves and is incredibly common. Neuropathy can be caused by an illness or injuries. Our team at Lambert Chiropractic Health Centre in Mississauga would like to look at the symptoms of neuropathy.

Pain

Neuropathy pain can differ from person to person. It can also differ from day to day. Most people report that the pain is stabbing, burning, stinging, cramping, or throbbing. The muscles may go into spasms. The pain can come and go or remain constant. The pain is often in the hands, feet, and legs, but can appear in other areas.

Numbness

A person with neuropathy may feel as if areas of his or her body have gone completely numb or have fallen asleep. Many people feel the same pins-and-needles sensation that they get when their limbs are waking up after falling asleep.

Weakness

Pain and numbness combine to make an area of the body weak. This is especially dangerous when a foot goes numb since the body relies on sensations from the feet to stand and walk. This can make people fall or lose their coordination. Sometimes the affected arm or leg becomes paralyzed. This paralysis can come and go.

Sensitivity

Areas of the body affected by neuropathy often become extremely sensitive to anything touching it, even very light materials like a bedsheet. Anything touching the skin becomes quite painful.

Sweating

Many people with neuropathy get hot sweats, even when they have not exercised or are in a cold environment. They may also feel very cold in hot weather. Nerve damage makes it difficult for the body to detect the current temperature.

Low Blood Pressure

People with neuropathy may have their blood pressure drop, which can cause light-headedness and dizziness or even fainting. People with neuropathy should stand slowly to avoid falling.

Incontinence

When the nerves are damaged, they cannot tell the body that it needs to go to the bathroom. This may lead to urinary or fecal incontinence.
